The camp of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticized the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accusing it of weakening Nigeria’s democratic system and relying on short-term relief measures to gain public support.
In a statement issued by Phrank Shaibu, Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, the government was accused of consolidating power while shrinking democratic space. He claimed that despite controlling key institutions, security structures, and enjoying incumbency advantages, the administration still shows signs of unease toward opposition forces.
Shaibu dismissed what he described as “stomach infrastructure politics,” arguing that distributing food items such as rice, spaghetti, and noodles cannot replace public trust or ensure electoral legitimacy.
He also alleged that opposition parties are being destabilized by internal crises, which he suggested are worsened by inconsistent judicial rulings. Additionally, he raised concerns about perceived bias in electoral processes and the alleged use of detention measures against opposition figures.
The statement referenced several prominent politicians, including Rotimi Amaechi, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Nasir El-Rufai, David Mark, and Rauf Aregbesola, as operating within what he described as an increasingly restricted political environment.
Shaibu warned that the current trajectory could lead to a de facto one-party system if opposition voices continue to be weakened.
Reaffirming Atiku’s stance, he emphasized the need for a democratic system driven by the will of the people rather than institutional influence, urging Nigerians to remain vigilant as the 2027 elections approach.
