Nigerian singer Sola Allyson has addressed long-standing assumptions about her music identity, stating that she is not a gospel artist but simply a singer. She made the clarification during an interview with Oyinmomo TV, posted on YouTube on Friday.
Allyson, known for her hit song “Eji Owuro,” said she has never referred to herself as a gospel musician, despite many people categorising her that way. Speaking in a mix of English and Yoruba, she stated:
> “I don’t sing religious songs. As I am like this, I don’t call myself a gospel artist. My name is Sola Allyson. I am a singer.”
When asked why her songs do not mention the name of Jesus, she explained that it was a deliberate artistic and spiritual choice.
> “Jesus didn’t say we should be mentioning His name. He didn’t say we should use His name for PR,” she said.
Her Marriage and Living Arrangement
During the interview, the 54-year-old also spoke openly about her marriage, revealing that although she is married, she does not live in the same house with her husband.
She explained that their arrangement reflects a realistic and mature understanding of love:
> “I am married but not living with my husband. He stays in his house and I also stay in my house. That’s the love people older than us didn’t tell us is hard. They made it seem like once you love each other, you will live happily ever after.”
Allyson emphasized that her marriage is a partnership where both partners chose each other, rejecting traditional expressions that suggest ownership.
> “Saying I am in my husband’s house is different from saying I married my husband. My husband and I married each other; we are in one another’s life.”
She added that her views align with the original ideas of feminism, which she described as the pursuit of equal choices for men and women.
“Feminism is not saying men are not good people. The idea is that the choices men have should also be available to women.”
