The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has demanded that Governor Seyi Makinde give a full account of the alleged ₦50 billion relief fund he reportedly received from President Bola Tinubu after the January 2024 explosion in Bodija, Ibadan, or step down from office.
The party’s position follows claims by former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, who said during a televised interview that Makinde collected the funds on behalf of victims when he visited the President to brief him on the incident. Fayose alleged that the governor neither publicly acknowledged receiving the money nor fully applied it to assist those affected by the explosion.
In a statement issued on Sunday by its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, the Oyo APC accused Makinde of failing to provide transparency over the funds. The party insisted that dismissive reactions from the governor’s aides were insufficient, arguing that the public deserved a clear explanation of how the money was spent.
The APC also criticised Makinde over comments he reportedly made during a recent media engagement, in which he allegedly disparaged President Tinubu and the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu. According to the party, the governor claimed he rejected a request to help organise the APC in Oyo State and questioned the minister’s capacity to perform.
The opposition party further accused Makinde’s administration of financial recklessness, alleging contract inflation and disregard for due process since he assumed office in 2019. It cited major projects, including the renovation of the Agodi Government House and the second phase of the Ibadan Circular Road, as examples of what it described as excessive spending.
On the Bodija explosion, the APC noted that Makinde previously claimed to have spent ₦4.5 billion on victims but argued that there were no clear records to show how the funds were disbursed. The party maintained that, given the allegation of a ₦50 billion federal relief fund, the governor must provide a detailed account of its utilisation.
The APC concluded by rejecting claims that it needed reorganisation under Makinde, insisting that the party remained strong in the state and capable of producing leadership it described as more innovative and effective than the current administration.
