Cameroon’s opposition leader, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, on Tuesday declared victory in the country’s presidential election, claiming to have defeated long-serving President Paul Biya, who has ruled for 43 years.
Official results from Sunday’s vote are not expected for at least two weeks, but Tchiroma took to Facebook to announce what he called a “clear victory,” urging the government to “accept the truth of the ballot box” or risk “plunging the country into turmoil.”
“Our victory is clear. It must be respected,” Tchiroma said, adding that his campaign would soon publish detailed regional results to back up his claim.
President Biya, 92, who has led Cameroon since 1982, has not yet commented on Tchiroma’s declaration.
