The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to disclose the reasons behind the abrupt removal of Nigeria’s top military service chiefs, including the Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Musa. The opposition party expressed concerns over the timing of the dismissals, which come amid widespread rumors of an attempted coup.
In a statement issued by ADC National Publicity Secretary Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party acknowledged the President’s authority as Commander-in-Chief to make such changes but emphasized that the sudden shake-up raised questions about transparency, stability, and security in the country.The ADC criticized the government’s reaction to the coup rumors as confused and lacking clarity.
The party highlighted that many of the dismissed service chiefs had been appointed just within the last 28 months, with the Chief of Defence Staff serving only a year in his previous role as Chief of Army Staff. ADC warned that such significant changes could have serious implications for military stability and called for strong reasons to justify the move.
Expressing concern about regional security challenges in neighboring Chad and the Sahel, the ADC accused the Tinubu administration of being distracted by political matters while insecurity and banditry continue to worsen across parts of Nigeria.
The party urged the Federal Government to provide Nigerians a clear and transparent explanation to reassure the public that democracy remains intact and to quell growing rumors and conspiracy theories around this development.“Our interest remains the stability of our country and our democracy,” the ADC stated, calling for transparency to maintain public confidence in the nation’s security.
