Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, former Governor of Sokoto State and current representative of Sokoto North, has issued a strong public endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership and governance agenda, urging political stakeholders and citizens in his region to solidify their backing ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Wamakko’s remarks came on Friday, January 9, 2026, at the Government House in Sokoto, where he was present for the flag-off of mobilisation funds for the reconstruction of the Sokoto Central Market’s burnt section, an initiative widely regarded as crucial for economic revitalisation in northern Nigeria.
Addressing lawmakers, traditional leaders, traders, and community stakeholders, Wamakko credited the Tinubu administration for what he described as fair and inclusive federal governance that has positively impacted Sokoto State.
“President Tinubu has been consistent in ensuring the prompt release of statutory allocations to all states. This has helped governors perform better and deliver development to their people. This is something we must acknowledge and appreciate,” the senator said.
Wamakko also highlighted the magnitude of federal appointments from Sokoto under Tinubu’s tenure, calling the representation “unprecedented in the political history of our state,” and interpreting it as evidence of commitment to fairness, justice and national unity by the federal government.
Political analysts regard the senator as a key APC leader in the North-West, a region considered pivotal in shaping electoral outcomes for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next general election cycle. His reaffirmation of loyalty to Tinubu is therefore seen as part of early efforts to mobilise support within strategic geopolitical zones.
The event that provided the backdrop for Wamakko’s remarks, the mobilisation of funds for the rebuilding of Sokoto Central Market, was attended by government officials, party leaders, and traders. One of the largest commercial hubs in the North-West, the market was severely damaged by fire in 2021, disrupting livelihoods and regional trade.
“It is our collective hope that the reconstruction of the market will restore economic activity and livelihoods,” Wamakko said, affirming support for the Governor Ahmad Aliyu-led state government’s efforts.
He also praised the governor’s infrastructure and economic revitalisation initiatives, describing them as visible and impactful, and pledged continued cooperation to maintain development momentum in Sokoto.
Wamakko’s endorsement comes at a moment when pro-Tinubu mobilisations are widening beyond Sokoto. Supportive political activities have been reported in other regions, including APC stakeholders rallying in Oyo and other parts of the country to position the president and his party ahead of the next election cycle.
Observers note that these early endorsements reflect broader strategies by ruling party figures to build momentum, consolidate influence, and shape voter perception long before 2027 ballots are cast, even as opposition groups prepare their own campaigns.
