Hon. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, a former Minister of State for Education and two-time member of the House of Representatives, has officially declared his intention to run for President of Nigeria in the 2027 general election under the banner of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The announcement, made on Monday in a statement from his office, signals his formal entry into a growing field of presidential aspirants and adds fresh momentum to discussions about alternative leadership ahead of the polls.
Nwajiuba, a seasoned lawyer called to the Nigerian Bar in 1989 and a former Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), emphasised that Nigeria’s current socio-economic and political challenges require substance over rhetoric and leadership grounded in clear policies and practical solutions.
In his declaration, Nwajiuba made a pointed critique of what he characterised as leadership that favours hollow rhetoric over meaningful action. He argued that the country’s pressing problems demand depth in policy formulation, effective negotiation skills, and robust grassroots political structures.
“The challenges facing Nigeria today demand leadership driven by clear policies, strategic negotiation, and a functional grassroots structure, not mere rhetoric,” the statement quoted him as saying.
The former minister said his extensive experience across the legislative and executive arms of government, as well as his tenure in key national institutions, has equipped him with a holistic understanding of governance, public finance, and institutional management, credentials he believes position him to guide the country through its current difficulties.
Nwajiuba outlined key focus areas for his campaign, including education reform, economic stabilisation, and restoring public trust in government institutions. He framed his presidential bid around what his statement termed a “competence-first” approach, advocating for leaders who combine professional expertise with practical governance experience.
“Nwajiuba enters the race with a message anchored on competence, policy depth, and institutional knowledge as the foundation for national governance,” part of the declaration said.
