The Rivers State House of Assembly on Monday approved five of the nine individuals nominated by Governor Siminalayi Fubara for appointment as commissioners, while four others were rejected after the screening exercise.
The decision was reached during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, following a screening session that lasted for more than two hours.
Amaewhule said the Assembly subjected all nine nominees to scrutiny before arriving at its resolution, noting that only five met the expectations of the lawmakers.
He explained that the four rejected nominees were dropped over unsatisfactory performance during the screening and concerns arising from petitions and issues surrounding their credentials.
According to the Speaker, the affected nominees were unable to convince the lawmakers of their readiness and competence to serve in the Rivers State Executive Council.
He added that the Assembly would formally notify the governor of its decision in line with legislative procedures.
Amaewhule also stated that a letter would be forwarded to the governor, urging him to proceed with the swearing-in of the five confirmed nominees.
Those whose nominations were declined are Prof. Datonye Alasia, Barr. Tamuno Williams, Otonye Amachree and Charity Deemua.
Meanwhile, the lawmakers cleared Tonye Belgam, Prof. Temple Nwafor, Dr Peters Nwagor, Lekue Kenneth and Amarigha Edward-Hart for appointment as commissioners.
The House subsequently adjourned plenary to Tuesday, March 17, 2026.
