The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, is set to resign from the Federal Executive Council following approval from President Bola Tinubu to pursue his governorship ambition in Oyo State.
The development comes after a meeting between the minister and the President at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where Adelabu presented a detailed report on his performance in the power sector over the past two and a half years.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations, Bolaji Tunji, the minister is expected to step down in the coming days.
The statement noted that Adelabu used the meeting to highlight key achievements recorded under his leadership, including efforts to stabilise electricity generation, improve transmission capacity and drive reforms across the sector.
It added that a major highlight of the engagement was the presentation of the National Integrated Electricity Policy and its Strategic Implementation Plan, alongside a medium- to long-term resource plan for the industry.
According to the statement, the anticipated resignation is timed to ensure continuity in ongoing reforms within the power sector before his exit from office.
Tunji explained that the minister had been working to address challenges such as fluctuations in power generation linked to gas supply constraints, pipeline repairs and outstanding obligations to gas suppliers.
He added that Adelabu also sought and obtained presidential approval for his planned resignation and political ambition.
President Tinubu was said to have commended the minister for his contributions to the sector, particularly in laying a policy framework aimed at transforming electricity supply in the country.
The President also gave his blessing for Adelabu to contest the governorship seat in Oyo State.
Adelabu, in turn, expressed appreciation to the President for his support and reaffirmed his commitment to advancing reforms in the power sector and contributing to national development.
