A faction of the African Democratic Congress has announced plans to disqualify individuals above 55 years from contesting for political offices on its platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The factional National Chairman, Nafiu Bala Gombe, disclosed this during an interview with BBC Hausa, where he outlined a reform agenda aimed at promoting youth participation in politics.
Gombe said the move was part of efforts to reposition the party and ensure greater inclusion of young Nigerians in leadership and decision-making processes.
According to him, the party intends to prioritise a generational shift by creating opportunities for younger aspirants to emerge as candidates.
He stated that under the new directive, individuals above the age of 55 would not be eligible to contest for positions within the party structure.
The ADC chieftain explained that the decision was driven by the need to inject fresh ideas and energy into the political system, which he said has been dominated by older politicians for decades.
He added that the party was determined to provide a platform for youths to take the lead in shaping Nigeria’s political future.
Gombe maintained that previous approaches to governance had not yielded the desired results, stressing that empowering younger leaders was critical to national development.
He said the policy would open up the political space for emerging leaders and encourage wider youth participation in elections.
The development comes amid ongoing leadership disputes within the party, with different factions laying claim to its structure ahead of the 2027 polls.
