Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has hinted that he may endorse a successor from within his current administration ahead of the 2027 governorship election, emphasizing the need for continuity and sustainable development in the state.
Makinde made the remark on Thursday during the Stakeholders’ Consultative and Engagement Meeting on the 2026 Budget, held at the Ogunlana Hall, International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan.
The governor, whose second term will end in 2027, explained that while the ultimate decision rests with the people of Oyo State, he may recommend someone from his team who understands and aligns with his developmental vision.
“If we put anybody forward in our team, what it means is that we have evaluated that individual. It wouldn’t be about the person alone. If, within the team, we have a roadmap for continued development of Oyo State for 2027 and beyond, and people who have already bought into it, that would be the best path forward,” Makinde stated.
He noted that the people of Oyo State have become politically aware and will now base their decisions on competence and performance rather than slogans or sentiment.
“The decision on who would be the next governor rests with the people of Oyo State. We will make our own submission to the people because Oyo State has gone beyond stunt politics. Maybe it used to happen in the past, but now, our people will ask you questions,” he added.
Makinde’s remarks suggest an emerging succession plan aimed at preserving his administration’s policy gains, infrastructural strides, and institutional reforms beyond his tenure.
Political observers say the governor’s comments are likely to trigger increased attention on key members of his cabinet and close associates as possible successors.
Governor Makinde, who was first elected in 2019 and re-elected in 2023, has earned praise for his focus on infrastructural renewal, fiscal discipline, and people-centered governance in Oyo State.
