Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has approved a N50,000 relief payment for all categories of workers in the state for May, as part of measures to cushion the impact of rising economic hardship.
The governor announced the package on Friday during the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration held at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos, with the theme “Insecurity, Poverty – Bane of Decent Work.”
Sanwo-Olu, who was represented at the event by his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, said the payment would be added to workers’ May salaries and would be subject to periodic review.
He said the intervention underscored the state government’s commitment to supporting the workforce across sectors, noting that Lagos’ growth was driven by the contributions of teachers, health workers, artisans and civil servants.
“Lagos is great because of you—the teacher who stays after hours, the nurse on night duty, and the artisan who passes skills to the next generation,” he said.
The governor acknowledged the prevailing economic challenges, including inflation and global economic shocks, stressing the need for government to provide practical support to citizens.
He announced that, “For this May, an additional N50,000 will be paid to every worker in Lagos State across board, irrespective of grade level.”
Sanwo-Olu added that the gesture would be reviewed as necessary in subsequent months depending on fiscal conditions.
He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare, strengthening infrastructure, and enhancing public service delivery across the state.
The governor noted that continuous engagement with organised labour remained crucial to maintaining industrial harmony, adding that his administration would sustain dialogue with unions.

On security, Sanwo-Olu said safety remained central to productivity and economic growth, disclosing that investments in surveillance systems, community policing and security infrastructure were ongoing to improve public safety.
He further stated that the administration would intensify efforts to complete key projects before the end of its tenure, including transport infrastructure, housing schemes and pension-related obligations.
According to him, the success of his government would be measured by completed projects and lasting reforms rather than announcements.
