Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has said he remains the only aspirant who expressed interest in contesting the presidential ticket of the Nigeria Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 election.
Obi spoke with journalists on Tuesday after appearing before the party’s presidential screening committee chaired by former governor, Sam Egwu.
The former Anambra State governor described the screening exercise as a demonstration of internal democracy and accountability within the party.
According to him, the process reflected the party’s commitment to transparency by ensuring that aspirants met constitutional requirements and provided necessary documents to support their claims.
“This is democracy in action because NDC chooses to do things properly. Nigerians want to know whether you meet the stipulated constitutional qualification and can defend your commitment to building a united and prosperous Nigeria,” Obi said.
He dismissed speculations that he had already emerged as the party’s consensus presidential candidate, insisting that the process remained open and democratic.
“How can it be based on consensus? The party opened the expression of interest forms for people to buy. I bought the form. As the party said, I’m the only one who expressed interest. That’s it,” he stated.
Obi also reacted to reports linking former President Goodluck Jonathan with the race, saying he was more concerned about rebuilding Nigeria than monitoring potential opponents.
The former governor said his focus ahead of the 2027 election was to promote national unity, improve security, tackle poverty and ensure that public resources worked for the benefit of all Nigerians.
