The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has dismissed Governor Seyi Makinde’s presidential ambition ahead of the 2027 general election, describing it as a project with little chance of success.
The opposition party made its position known in a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, following Makinde’s emergence as the presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement.
Makinde was presented with the APM presidential flag during a political event held in Ibadan on Saturday, officially positioning him in the race for Nigeria’s highest office.
Reacting to the development, the APC accused the governor of shifting attention away from governance in Oyo State in pursuit of national political ambitions.
The party argued that Makinde should remain focused on addressing the challenges confronting residents rather than embarking on what it described as an unrealistic presidential quest.
According to the APC, the governor has yet to satisfy the expectations of many residents after nearly seven years in office and should prioritise his constitutional responsibilities.
The party maintained that, as the chief executive of the state, Makinde possesses the authority and resources required to tackle pressing issues affecting the people.
“Governor Makinde’s presidential ambition is dead on arrival,” the statement read.
The APC further expressed concern that the governor’s political aspiration could distract his administration from governance, warning that residents might bear the consequences of such a shift in focus.
The party also contended that Oyo State deserves leadership committed to collective progress, humility and effective service delivery, insisting that the governor had failed to demonstrate those qualities during his time in office.
The latest criticism adds another dimension to the growing political debate surrounding Makinde’s emergence as the APM presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 elections.
