Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have returned the sum of ₦100,000 each, which was credited to their personal bank accounts on the directive of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Hon. Enemi Aabo George.
According to the statement, lawmakers of the 10th Rivers State House of Assembly received bank alerts of ₦100,000 on December 30, 2025. The funds, however, were described as unsolicited and unapproved by the legislature.
“The said amount was transferred on the instructions of the Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, into the personal accounts of members,” the statement read.
George said that upon discovering the transfers, the lawmakers immediately took steps to refund the money to the Rivers State Government’s account.
He stressed that the House, as a constitutionally established institution, is committed to due process and legislative oversight, insisting that all public spending must receive legislative approval.
The statement further accused the governor of repeatedly withdrawing funds from the Consolidated Revenue Account of the state without authorisation from the House, despite warnings, Supreme Court judgements, and constitutional provisions on separation of powers.
The action by the lawmakers comes amid renewed political tension in Rivers State, particularly involving the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former governor, Nyesom Wike.
